Suddenly, Devon was moving and Nate scrambled to keep up. For such a small man, he was quick as he dodged through the crowd heading, Nate noted with relief, for the door that led back up to their apartment.
Their apartment, damn it. Not Nate’s. Theirs.
When Devon pulled the private door open and began to scurry up the stairs, Nate was right on his heels. He grabbed Devon by the upper arms and pinned him against the wall as the door slammed shut with an echoing bang.
Now, Nate could see the tears that pricked Devon’s eyes and he wished with all his heart they weren’t there, knowing that somehow he was responsible for them. Well, him and Duncan, he thought with a flash of anger. He’d be sorting Duncan out later, but that could wait for another time. Right now his man was hurting. He needed to be reassured and taken care of.
“What did that bastard say to you?” Nate demanded, his voice sounding strained and rough even to his own ears.
But Devon ignored the question completely. “Is this about sex? Is that it? Am I just a warm, tight hole you want to fuck?”
“What?! No! Is that what he said to—”
“I told you everything. I bared my soul to you, my most humiliating and painful moments. Why didn’t you tell me about the others? About The Compound? About your parents? Who are you anyway?” Devon demanded, his voice rising with his accusations until the pain and emotions echoed off the walls of the stairwell. “Why did you pretend to care?”
“I didn’t,” Nate denied. He was mortified to see a tear slip down one pale cheek.
Devon began to struggle against his hold, but Nate just wrapped his arms around the smaller man and hung on all the harder. “I mean I didn’t pretend. I do care for you. More than I should, probably.”
Devon stilled in his arms for a moment before he began to struggle once more.

Hell, Nate wasn’t sure he understood it either, but he held on until Devon realised he wasn’t going anywhere and settled down enough to listen.
“I know we haven’t known each other very long, but I feel drawn to you. I can’t explain it. You have no idea how much I wanted to tell you. Everything. But I couldn’t. I can’t risk everything we’ve all worked so hard for here.” He prayed with every fibre of his being that Devon would give him a chance. Forgive him. “It wasn’t just a matter of me accepting the risk and living with the consequences. Can’t you see? I have to protect them and keep my head. I have to use my brain even when…even when my heart wants to do something completely different.”
Devon stood so perfectly still, watching him for such a long time that Nate began to get nervous, wondering if Devon ever intended to talk to him again.
“You went through my duffel. You weren’t just washing my clothes. That’s why you looked so guilty that day.
